Iraqis Elated American Troops Have Gone

As promised, American combat troops withdrew from Iraqi cities today marking a critical first step towards all American forces leaving the country by Dec. 31, 2011.

Iraqis have been celebrating the troops withdrawal since last night, reportedly setting off fireworks and having celebrations in the streets.

The Iraqi government declared today National Sovereignty Day, a celebration of the U.S.-led invasion six years ago that threw Saddam Hussein out of power.

Although more than 130,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq the country’s security has been turned over to Iraqi police and soldiers. President Obama has said that all combat troops will have left by the end of 2010.

Thankfully, it finally came. Sadly, another four troops died in the process.

SabreeThinks Iraqis needed to take control of their own situation and have been wanting to for some time, so this departure was long overdue.
