Reports that the award-winning Washington Post tried selling access to a “powerful few” may forever tarnish its reputation.

“The Washington Post offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record access to ‘those powerful few’ — Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and even the paper’s own reporters and editors,” POLITICO reported.

POLITCO said this offer surfaced when a concerned health care lobbyist notified a reporter of the flier which, for a fee, offers access to its “health care reporting and editorial staff.”

The paper’s publisher denies she knew anything about the flier.

It’s a sad day when an exalted newspaper like the Post throws ethics out of the window in exchange for money. Newspapers like the Post are supposed to be the gold-standard for news.

Journalists, like those employed at the Post, are supposed to present news that’s accurate and without bias. This practice becomes compromised when interest groups can buy access from a news organization.

SabreeThinks the Washington Post may never regain the level of respect it once had due to this suspected scandal.
